Managing Displacement examines the complex architecture of ‘migration management’ within and beyond Europe’s borders through newly commissioned essays from a diverse range of voices. European states increasingly extend their border controls into so-called ‘third countries’, systematically shifting enforcement beyond their own territories. As the European Union advances its technocratic approach to migration, outsourcing has become a central tactic—resulting in routine border violence and the erosion of displaced people’s rights behind layers of bureaucratic distance. How can we confront and challenge the practice of outsourcing and its far-reaching consequences?
