Eux et les autres ou les autres et eux

This project focuses on my personal exploration of a single word: BOLD. Over these past months, through extensive visual research, a textual essay, photographs (portraits) of people with bold physical traits and/or behaviors, and drawing, I have attempted to develop, deepen, and concretize my own vision and definition of the word through the human being, primarily. By this, I refer to their physicality, behavior, society, choices, and impact, particularly on others.

The project is divided into three sections. Each illustrates a protagonist, inspired by individuals I previously photographed, and explores, based on my interpretation of them, their daily lives and the impact each has on everything external to them. Positive or not, I have attempted to represent a minority often marginalized within a society very close to the one I live in.

Through examples of bold physics and behavior, sometimes more simple, sometimes exaggerated, I question the norms, codes, ideas, and categorizations established by society, which every individual perpetuates, consciously or not.

Because, after all, in trying to represent my vision of what Bold is, both in general and through an individual, I am participating in a certain categorization. Paradoxical, isn’t it? So, in the end, isn’t this project a satire, a mockery? I suppose my mockery reveals itself through the perpetuation  of categorization even as I criticize it.
