Undertones

This print, created as an assignment for a Wiels auction in 2012, is derived from a previously made painting, also titled Undertones, but that one is an actual Venetian blind with a painting (oil on canvas) behind it.

The work, featuring a glove in an interior space, conveys a certain intimacy. By printing the Venetian blind as a silkscreen over a photo print, layers are added. The Venetian blind has a voyeuristic quality, and the hand reaches for something behind a wall that is invisible. At the same time, a part of the Venetian blind is omitted. Aukje Koks finds the silkscreen technique particularly beautiful, as its inherent transparency due to the raster effect adds a subtle intimacy to the image.
